AWKWARD: The Social Dos and Don'ts of Being a Young Adult

This strategic book is designed to teach young adults, especially those on the autism spectrum, how to handle everyday social situations in a way that’s respectful and socially acceptable. Recommended by Temple Grandin, PhD, it uses clear, step-by-step instructions and proven strategies to help students develop important CASEL skills like self-awareness, managing emotions, understanding others, building relationships, and making good choices. Written by Katie Saint, a behavior analyst, and Carlos Torres, a special educator, the book breaks down common social situations at home, with friends, at work, and in the community.

Each lesson is easy to follow and includes helpful “do” and “don’t” pictures with simple bullet points that explain what is and isn’t appropriate and why. The scenarios and pictures make it easy to understand social challenges, and each lesson includes a sample script, discussion questions, and a self-assessment. The lessons can be used on their own, so you can easily find a specific scenario (like “How do I interact in a group?”, “How do I handle secrets?”, or “How do I resolve conflict at work?”) and use it as a teaching tool whenever needed.
